“A Room Swept White” are a 5 piece Post-Hardcore band from the South East based in Horsham/Crawley. They played a dynamic show at this year’s RedFest on the Hype Stage. We were completely blown away by their sheer energy and verve.
We managed to catch up with the guys backstage for a chat about their new EP – and how things are progressing for the band.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST EP
We’ve had a lot of good feedback about it. A lot of people have said that we have matured since our last album – I think we’re all quite happy with it (agreement all round).
THE EP IS TITLED “UNSETTLED” – TELL US ABOUT FEELING UNSETTLED
We thought about being home sick and away from home when we were working on the EP. We were thinking about how we deal with being home sick… that was the idea of “Unsettled”. And ‘Death Before Dishonour‘- when we wrote that – it was kinda like ‘Friend-wise’ when they don’t come and watch us at our shows… We get a bit sick of it. You want your friends to come down and watch you. But they’re not supporting you. We wanted to write about those feelings as well. We then kinda linked the two songs together with an instrumental piece. We are writing for a new album (so we didn’t want to put too many new songs out on this.) We’ve got a few ideas. The E.P. was like a ‘teaser’ of hopefully what we are gonna sound like on this next recording.
HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED – MUSICALLY – FOR YOU ?
Things have grown since we dropped ‘Broken Time’. Now it’s probably more pop-punk. But somehow it’s a lot harder too. There are still a lot of pop-punk riffs in there – but it is much harder core. It has got a clearer singing voice in it now too.
HOW DO YOU WRITE YOUR SONGS ?
We tend to jam stuff in practice. We might find something at home – then maybe program some drums onto it – send it back over to each other. We email each other with ideas.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING GIGS?
We played a show in Horsham ( with Palm Reader ) … We headlined in Crawley. That is our hometown. We did Guilfest. But we’re really excited to play Redfest . We put in for it as soon as we could … and we’re really excited to play the hardcore metal Hype Stage [see review here ]
When we played in Guilfest we were playing on the introducing stage – it was good (Skindred were playing next door) but it wasn’t perfect. But Redfest is perfect for us. They have different stages for different band genres.
WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOUR’RE A ‘LIVE’ BAND OR AN ‘ALBUMS’ BAND?
First we would say that we are a ‘live’ band. We put out a lot of energy. We have grown energy-wise on stage. Before, when we first started out, I think we were quite shy on stage – but now we have grown our stage presence – we are a lot tighter. I would like to say we are also an ‘albums’ band – but when we find ourselves in front of a crowd … well, that makes us feel pumped . And then we want to play better.
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO MOVE YOUR SOUNDS OUT OF SURREY AND TAKE YOUR MUSIC INTO THE WIDE WORLD ?
We played a couple of shows in London and we saw a couple of people around with our T-shirts. And our new EP is free. So that should help. We self-produce it – we’re not money orientated (we’d rather go on tour and be broke than not do it) and we just want people to enjoy our music. So we issue a free EP because it is an invitation to our music. But we made a bit of money off of our first album.
If someone says, “This is a really good EP – but I wish there were more songs … ” This is exactly what we want them to say. (Then they will go out and find our album. )
If people download our new material on their phones – (http://aroomsweptwhite.bandcamp.com/) then they can read the lyrics and respond to it – sing it back to us.
SO WHEN IS THE NEW ALBUM DUE?
We have added a new guitarist and new bassist recently. So now we have a solid line-up. We are probably aiming for the end of this year – or the beginning of the next.
Grande! We can’t wait. Thanks “A Room Swept White”
