Interview with THE TREATMENT

Take a good slug of Aerosmith, a hit of Kiss, a measure of Lizzy and a good portion of Leppard. Then drop in a slice or two of Lizzy. The concoction that you will serve yourself is the full Treatment.

The phrase “This band has a lot of potential” is easy to bandy about. But for these young guys it is so, so true. (They started playing when they were just 15 years of age – and they are still only in their early twenties.) They create 1980’s style power / melodic rock in a way that creates the spirit of the party. They see their music as a celebration. They play it in excited triumph. They provide the will and the power to get you through a tough week . They provide the energy to get you up and dance. And they deliver the raw energy you need to survive. Basically, their passion and dash will make you beg for more.

The Treatment – five boys from Cambridge – experienced an “up and down year” in 2013. However, they played Ozzfest Japan! And they recruited 19 year old Jake Pattinson for lead guitar, they toured with Airborne, they played Hard Rock Hell  and they shimmied and shook with Quo at Hammersmith Apollo.

Treatment get in a vanSO, HOW WAS JAPAN?

“Yes. It was unbelievable. 20,000 people ready to go from minute one. It was literally like a different planet. It was so different from anything we had ever seen before. They’re such good rock fans over there. From 11 o’clock in the morning (till late at night) they are ALL there… and they are ALL ready to go. And we couldn’t believe how organised everything was. Everything we needed was there. The people were lovely. They couldn’t have treated us any better. It’s how it should be…. in rock.

DO YOU THINK THIS WILL BE THE BEGINNING OF MORE STUFF FOR YOU IN SOUTH EAST ASIA ?

Yeah! Hopefully so. We’ll go anywhere.

BACK IN 2012 – IN CELEBRATION OF RECORD STORE DAY – YOU RELEASED AN E.P. OF COVER TRACKS – SONGS LIKE ‘MOTORBIKIN’ BY CHRIS SPEDDING, ‘RUN RUN RUN’ BY JO JO GUNNE AND OF COURSE SLADE’S ‘TAKE ME BACK ‘OME’ … WE HAVE JUST BEEN REVISITING THAT…

Yes, it was called ‘THEN AND AGAIN’ … Yes, we are all massive fans of old school bands like Slade, Dr Feelgood … sort of ‘Grown Up’ stuff … And to be fair, a lot of kids of our age don’t really know who Chris Spedding even is. So we are re-introducing those sounds. Letting the kids listen to the music of these classic bands. Kids our age, if they listen to a classic rock band, they will listen to AC/DC … but they won’t explore much other stuff.

SO DO YOU ENJOY PLAYING THAT OLD STUFF?

We love it. We used to play it live .. When we used to do a headline set, we used to slip a couple of these covers on at the end. We love playing them. And people love hearing them. And, when we released that E.P. we were in a transition … we were making one album, while we had just released another one. So, we wanted to release something so people didn’t forget us. The E.P. did really, really well. We basically sold out of all the copies.

WHAT IS THE SECRET OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR, DO YOU THINK?

It’s all about getting out there and doing it. Working , networking, playing, gigging, doing it. Just doing it. Some bands nowadays think its all about putting yourself on You Tube and putting yourself on Facebook… Yeah, you’ll get friends on Facebook, and you’ll get likes on You Tube. But that doesn’t mean that people will come to your shows. There’s no easy way of doing it. You just need to get in a van and go to as many places as you possibly can. It’s the only way of doing it. It’s the old-school way of doing it. There’s only so much that the internet can do for you.

HOW HAS (NEW GUITAR) JAKE FITTED INTO THE TREATMENT?

Well, we all listened to Jake’s playing and we all really liked it. He’s a nice guy. He was looking for a band and … thankfully … he came across us. It’s going really well so far. It was his second show at Hard Rock Hell and he coped really, really well. The new album was already done before Jake joined us, so he didn’t participate in making that album… but he will fit in well with our plans.

In literally a period of just two weeks we lost our guitar player (Ben) and then Jake joined us … in just two weeks he learned the set and came on stage. It’s been a whirlwind for him.

IT’S AMAZING. AND HE’S ONLY 19.   MOST 19 YEAR OLDS ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN KERRANG! STYLE MUSIC …

Yes. But Jake has come from the same school as us. He comes from AC/DC, the Stones, all the Classic bands. That’s why he fitted in right away.

YOU MUST HAVE LEARNT A LOT FROM ALL THESE PEOPLE – THOSE BIG NAMES – THAT YOU HAVE BEEN TOURING WITH.

Yeah… this stuff is priceless. Like just having a one-to-one with people like Nikki Sixx or Gene Simmons. You couldn’t buy [that experience.] And we got to see pro bands. Every night.

We were out (in the U.S.) touring for 3 months. We played 53 shows with these guys! We have seen Kiss and Mötley Crüe 53 times… think about it… if you’re in a band, then you are gonna start picking up certain ways of doing stuff. We picked up so-ooo much stage-craft that it has become almost reflex for us now.

Treatment Kiss and Motley Crue 53 timesPEOPLE CANNOT IMAGINE HOW MUCH WORK AND DEDICATION BANDS LIKE KISS STILL PUT IN…

Yeah! Them guys are in their sixties … We did a show with them in Phoenix and it was 108 degrees that day. And those old guys were on stage in flames and with pyro. And in their full gear. And we were, like “How are you still standing? “ “How are you still alive?” It was so hot that – literally – we couldn’t hold our cymbals. After just half an hour on stage we literally felt like we would collapse. But those old guys went on and they did a full hour and a half! In full gear.

And, it was so hot, that you could fry an egg on the stage floor. It’s no joke. We saw a flip-flop that had melted on the floor!

You cannot moan about anything when you are around them lot. And yet they’re really cool too. One of the first things they said to us was, “If there’s anything you need, just let us know .. we have been the band that is trying to break through … we have been the first band on a tour … we know what it is like.”

WELL, THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK & COMMITMENT TOO!
