‘The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets’ is OUT NOW. But what did our noble Scriba Pontificus here at METAL AS RELIGION think about it?
Marmozets are a five-piece alternative rock band from the United Kingdom. Formed in Bingley, West Yorkshire in 2007, the band consists of Becca Macintyre (vocals), Sam Macintyre (guitar/vocals), Jack Bottomley (guitar), Will Bottomley (bass/vocals) and Josh Macintyre (drums). Marmozets signed to Roadrunner Records in October 2013 and released their debut album yesterday.
‘Born Young and Free’ – has frayed nerves and the type of hazardous energy that scatters debris over a surprisingly wide distance. This is as fierce and as alive as you can possibly imagine. And the low moaning chords with hazy guitars tearing into them – contribute to the hoisting of that wonderfully shrilly voice to the heights ecstatic fury. What a treat!
‘Why Do You Hate Me?’ The worst thing is the confessional emo, so self-centered and so despairing. Therefore, a song called ‘Why Do You Hate Me?’ has to be treated with caution. But no, this may be romantically bitter – deep down in its half-hidden cortex – but actually it’s fun and punkish. The riff is (we belive) the best you will have heard in a long time. It just makes your toes curl in satisfied contortions. And the whole thing expresses itself like a hale-shower on a hot-day. This will give you the chills and the sweats – all at once.
‘Captivate You’ has been released on video. That sigh from the willow guitar at the start says it all. This is melodramatic, sore and kinda grouchy. It clings to you like a sickened black-capped capuchin.
The drum-work of ‘Is It Horrible’ is more addictive than speed – but it does not fuck you up forever (like meth will.) And when the voice dashes in – it’s more exciting than a night out with the Graveyard Crips. This is a song that shoots as it loots…
‘Move Shake Hide’ is the heaviest. It sticks out like an out-of-control colossus. The vocals are carefully controlled (though) and the punk-style chords are completely mesmerizing. This is a feast for the eardrums.
Angst-filled, angry, frustrated … yeah, yeah, yeah. But to be honest this is all overshadowed by the sheer talent and the unbelievable excitement. This is simply the best album we’ve heard in a long time …
