The Swedish heavy metal band Ghost was formed in 2006 and keep their identities unto-themselves…
Their names have never been publicly disclosed; the vocalist describes himself only as Papa Emeritus and the musicians are just referred to as Nameless Ghouls.
Following their headline performances on The Pit Stage at this year’s Reading & Leeds Festivals, Ghost have now confirmed the UK leg of their upcoming headline Euro tour.
It will be the first time that the band has headlined their own shows in the UK. [Dates below]
Meanwhile, we listened again to Cirice taken from the fascinating and successful new album ‘Meliora’ :
Maybe this was inspired by Countess Elizabeth Bathory, who was one of the most repugnant serial killers in history.
Now revered rather than reviled by these messengers of doom metal — the noble-murderess accounted for hundreds of victims and was a self-confessed vampire. She could be described as the female equivalent of Vlad the Impaler. And also considered to be the real Countess Dracula.
The song begins with rattling spears of pallid guitar-work and an ethereal synth note that seems to steam from a hole left in the carcass.
Then things start to bubble and smoke, gloriously. The bass-notes burn and the ashen riffs blister.
But, strangely, the main voice is clear, smooth and even angelically afloat.
Does that make this piece of music more bizarre & horrific or less? The youthful tongue of Papa Emeritus reminds us, at times, of a child singing in the cellar. Alone. Afraid and in darkness yes… But also this is chillingly perky…
In fact it, this is a very hopeful piece of music.
Expertly, it twists and re-organizes itself. Like a fairy changeling — we continue to think that it is going to become a fearsome beast sometime soon… But it never does.
Perhaps that is why it is so scary!
